Lawsuit filed over catastrophic injuries from electrocution

A man's parents have filed a lawsuit on his behalf after he suffered terrible burns from a power line. The incident took place at the Gulfport Yacht Club and caused catastrophic injuries to the victim. Although this club is not in New York, similar cases are heard in the state's courtrooms throughout the year.

The man, who is 21 years old, will need to be taken care of for the rest of his life, according to the suit. His parents, who are acting as his conservators, have sued on his behalf in order to seek monetary damages to pay for that care. His right arm and both legs had to be amputated because of the severity of the burns.

The lawyer who filed the suit is asking for damages from both the yacht club and Mississippi Power, claiming that they are both responsible for the tragedy. He is asking for compensation for all medical expenses related to the incident, including those from the past and in the future. Punitive damages are being sought as well.

According to the suit, the placement of the power lines caused the accident to occur, which would make both the power company and the yacht club negligent. The lines ran directly above a sailboat rigging area. A trailer hitch struck the power line when the man was removing the hitch from a sailboat. Over 85 percent of his body received 3rd- and 4th-degree burns.

Lawsuits such as this one suggest that such accidents could be avoided if companies would keep a check on power lines and make sure that they are not in areas where electric shock could occur. Anyone in New York who has suffered catastrophic injuries themselves, or had a loved one suffer injuries because of the negligence of a person or company, may consult with a personal injury attorney. The lawyer will guide the victim in how to proceed to seek damages for their monetary, physical, and emotional suffering.
